Obituary for William H Hodges

William H. Hodges age 97of Cinnaminson and formerly of Somerdale passed away December 23, 2020. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 71 years, Catherine (nee Mannion) in 2018, and earlier this year by his son, William, “Stretch” and brother, Charles R. and previously his brother, Walter and sisters, Elinor Hodges and Rosemary Guerlia He is survived by: his daughters, Cathy (Richard) Vose of Cinnaminson, Ginny (Bruce) Cavalier of Moorestown and Maureen (Jeffrey) Long of Waterford; a son, Frank (Karen) Hodges of Atco and daughter-in-law, Mae McGinley of Berlin; grandchildren, Kevin Long, Caitlin Cristella, Rebecca D’Imperio, Mark Cavalier, Richard A. Vose, Shannon McGinley, Stanley Riser, and Michael Cortes; great grandchildren, Joseph, Christopher, Joneah, Makaylah, Cruize and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Mr. Hodges was born in the Tioga section Philadelphia and attended St. Joe’s Prep, St. Joseph University and Drexel University School of Engineering all on full scholarships. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on his 19th birthday at Camp Croft in Clemson SC in 1943. He attended Brooklyn Polytech while serving in the Army and in 1944 went on to Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. He was discharged from the Army in 1945 and married his dear, “Kay” in 1947. During his long career he worked as a construction estimator for many companies including John J. Henley, E. John Construction Co., Phildi Construction Co., and Frommeyer Construction. The family settled in Somerdale, NJ where they raised their 5 children. A member of Our Lady of Grace Church in Somerdale for more than fifty years, Mr. Hodges served as a Eucharistic Minister in the parish and president of the Holy Name Society for the tri-state area. He notably served on the Somerdale town council and was affectionately called "Mr. Wonderful" by friends and neighbors.
Services and burial with Military Honors will be held privately for the family out of caution and respect for everyone’s health and safety. Those in attendance will kindly follow the safety practice of social distancing and wearing masks.
